This guide will help you easily get up and running with OpenNIC DNS!

Closest Tier 2 servers to your location (ordered from nearest to farthest and sorted by reliability and unique administrators):

NOTE

If you are not using Windows, Mac, or Ubuntu Linux, please refer to this wiki page, which has instructions for more advanced configurations.

Windows

1. Choose two or more IP addresses from here, then open the Control Panel and click on Network and Sharing Center as seen below.
NetworkSettings

2. Click “Change Adapter Settings” in the left bar.
ChangeAdapterSettings

3. Right click on your network device and choose properties. In my case this was Local Area Connection, but it could also be a wireless adapter or named something else.
ChooseProperties

4. Choose the IP version you would like to set the DNS settings for and click “properties”. I will be choosing IPv4 for this guide, but the steps are basically identical for IPv6.
IPversion

5. In the window that pops up, click “Advanced” in the bottom right of the windows.
ClickAdvanced

6. Click the “DNS” tab at the top.
ClickDNS

7. Click Add and then type a Tier2 server IP in the box that pops up and click add again.
ClickAddandAdd

You may repeat the add step as many times as you want to add more DNS servers. DNS servers added to the list are being tried consecutively after a short timeout when one or more of them are offline.
8. Click OK until you are out of dialogue boxes!

You should now be set up to use OpenNIC!

Mac

1. Click on your “Apple” menu and choose “System Preferences“.

2. Double-Click on the “Network” icon.

3. Go to the “TCP/IP” tab. If your computer is configured to use a dynamic IP address, (notice “Using DHCP” in the drop-down box next to “Configure”). This is where you can change your DNS settings, by entering the appropriate DNS servers in the “DNS Servers” box.

4. Enter two or more OpenNIC DNS server IP address, preferably the nearest to your location, which you can find here.

5. Apply your settings by clicking the “Apply Now” button.

You should now be set up to use OpenNIC! You may need to restart your browser and reconnect to the Internet before the changes come into effect.

Ubuntu Linux

1. Left-click Network Manager icon from the System Tray

2. Click "Edit Connections" from the menu

3. Select the appropriate tab ("Wired/Wireless") depending on your connection

4. Double-click your connection

5. Select the IPv4 or IPv6 tab depending on your connection (if you're not sure, you're probably using IPv4)

6. Change the "Method" to "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only"

7. In the DNS servers box, enter two server IP addresses from here separated by a comma.

8. Click "Save"

9. Disconnect and reconnect to your network; restart your browser.

You should now be set up to use OpenNIC!
