What is OpenNIC?

OpenNIC is a user controlled Network Information Center offering a democratic, non-national, alternative to the traditional Top-Level Domain registries. In case you were looking for them, the traditonal TLDs are currently served by Network Solutions with policies set by ICANN.

Users of the OpenNIC DNS servers, in addition to resolving host names in LegacyDNS the Legacy U.S. Government DNS, can resolve host names in the SponsoredTLDs OpenNIC operated namespaces as well as in the namespaces with which we have peering agreements.

Who can participate?

Membership in OpenNIC is open to every user of the Internet. All decisions are made either by a democratically elected administrator or through a direct ballot of the interested members and all decisions, regardless of how they are made, within OpenNIC are appealable to a vote of the general membership.

How can I assist/become involved with OpenNIC?

At the moment we are reorganizing OpenNIC to better serve those who seek an alternative domain name system that is not subject to the draconian and onerous oversight of ICANN. Whether you would like to volunteer to assist with the various tasks that keep OpenNIC up and running, or simply want to learn how to access OpenNIC domains, you'll find the answers in a number of community forums:
