"Here are three
short videos from the British Pathe film
archive which provides an interesting insight
into social history. Bouncing flounces (The petticoat action starts at approximately 35 seconds) It's 'snowing down south' ... straight slips, but an amusing reflection of the times.

This is a child's skirt, but it could be scaled up easily.

"I think devotees of The
Pond should be aware of something new: YouTube has introduced a
function where it is possible to change the speed of what you are viewing.
There is fortunately an abundance of videos with petticoat content on
YouTube, and it is now possible often to watch an original
sequence from a 1958 movie, in HD, and
slow the speed of the important parts to 1/4! To see an original 1950's
petticoat swirling out at very slow speed, so we can see all the detail of
the lovely net, ribbon
and lace, is something we could only of dreamt of even a year ago." Jean L. points to these videos: Fashion and Style in the 50s Full fluff square dancing ...and here is a frenetic Boogie-Woogie video from Mike F. |

Denise makes a good point regarding the above video: "A word of caution.
I've been advised more than once at square dance shops never to store
petticoats
fully enclosed
in plastic for long, as they will go flat. One end should be left open. They need to breathe. Packing like in the video for just a few hours shouldn't be a problem."
